2. Говоріть голосно до всіх сихемських господарів: Що ліпше для вас: чи панування над вами семидесяти мужів, усіх Єруббаалових синів, чи панування над вами мужа одного? І пам'ятайте, що я кість ваша та тіло ваше.
3. І говорили брати його матері про нього голосно до сихемських господарів усі ті слова, і їхнє серце схилилося до Авімелеха, бо вони сказали: Він наш брат.
4. І дали йому сімдесят шеклів срібла з дому Баал-Беріта, а Авімелех найняв за них пустих та легковажних людей, і вони пішли за ним.
5. А він прийшов до дому свого батька в Офру, і повбивав своїх братів, синів Єруббаалових, сімдесят чоловіка на однім камені. І позостався тільки Йотам, син Єруббаалів, наймолодший, бо сховався.
6. І були зібрані всі сихемські господарі та ввесь Бет-Мілло, і вони пішли та й настановили Авімелеха за царя при Елон-Муццаві, що в Сихемі.
7. І повідомили про це Йотама, і він пішов, і став на верхів'ї гори Ґаріззім, і підвищив свій голос, і закликав та й сказав їм: Почуйте мене, сихемські господарі, і хай почує вас Бог!
8. Пішли були раз дерева, щоб помазати царя над собою, і сказали вони до оливки: Царюй ти над нами!
9. А оливка сказала до них: Чи я загубила свій товщ, що Бога й людей ним шанують, і сторожити піду над деревами?
10. І сказали дерева до фіґи: Іди ти, та й над нами царюй!
11. І сказала їм фіґа: Чи я загубила свої солодощі та свій добрий врожай, і сторожити піду над деревами?
12. І дерева промовили до винограду: Іди ти, та й над нами царюй!
13. І промовив до них виноград: Чи я загубив свого сока, що Бога й людей веселити, і сторожити піду над деревами?
14. Тоді всі дерева сказали тернині: Іди ти, та й над нами царюй!
15. А тернина сказала деревам: якщо справді мене на царя над собою помазуєте, підійдіть, поховайтеся в тіні моїй! А як ні, то ось вийде огонь із тернини, та кедри ливанські поїсть!
16. А тепер, якщо направду й у невинності зробили ви, що настановили Авімелеха царем, і якщо ви добре зробили з Єруббаалом та з домом його, і якщо ви зробили йому за заслугою рук його,
17. бо мій батько воював за вас, і кинув був життя своє на небезпеку, і врятував вас із руки Мідіяна,
18. а ви сьогодні повстали на дім батька мого, та й повбивали синів його, сімдесят люда, на одному камені, і настановили царем Авімелеха, сина його невільниці, над сихемськими господарями, бо він брат ваш,
19. і якщо в правді й невинності зробили ви з Єруббаалом та з домом його цього дня, то радійте Авімелехом, і нехай і він радіє вами!
20. А як ні, вийде огонь з Авімелеха, та й поїсть господарів Сихему й Бет-Мілло, і вийде огонь із господарів Сихему й з Бет-Мілло, та й з'їсть Авімелеха.
21. І втік Йотам і збіг, і пішов до Бееру, і сидів там перед братом своїм.
22. І володів Авімелех над Ізраїлем три роки.
23. І послав Господь злого духа між Авімелехом та між сихемськими господарями, і зрадили сихемські господарі Авімелеха,
24. щоб прийшла кривда семидесяти Єруббаалових синів, а їхня кров спала на Авімелеха, їхнього брата, що їх повбивав, та на сихемських господарів, що зміцнили його руки забити братів своїх.
25. І сихемські господарі поставили на верхів'ях гір чатівників на нього, і вони грабували все, що приходило до них на дорозі. І сказано про це Авімелеху.
26. І прийшов Ґаал, Еведів син, та брати його, і вони прийшли до Сихему, і довірилися йому сихемські господарі.
27. І виходили вони в поле, і збирали виноград свій, і вичавлювали, і робили празник. І входили вони до дому свого бога, і їли й пили та проклинали Авімелеха.
28. І говорив Ґаал, син Еведів: Хто Авімелех і хто Сихем, що будемо служити йому? Чи ж він не син Єруббаалів, а Зевул начальник його? Служіть людям Гемора, батька Сихема, а чому ми будемо служити йому?
29. А хто дав би цього народа в мою руку, то я прогнав би Авімелеха. І він скаже до Авімелеха: Помнож своє військо, та й вийди!
30. І почув Зевул, голова міста, слова Ґаала, сина Еведового, і запалився його гнів.
31. І послав він послів до Авімелеха з хитрістю, говорячи: Ось Ґаал, син Еведів, та брати його приходять до Сихему, і ось вони підбурюють місто проти тебе.
32. А тепер устань уночі ти та той народ, що з тобою, і чатуй на полі.
33. І буде, встанеш рано вранці, як сходитиме сонце, і нападеш на місто. І ось, він та народ той, що з ним, вийдуть до тебе, а ти зробиш йому, як знайде потрібним рука твоя.
34. І встав уночі Авімелех та ввесь народ, що з ним, та й чатували над Сихемом чотири відділи.
35. І вийшов Ґаал, син Еведів, і став при вході міської брами. І встав Авімелех та народ, що з ним, із засідки.
36. А Ґаал побачив той народ, та й сказав до Зевула: Ось народ сходить із верхів гір. І сказав до нього Зевул: Ти бачиш гірську тінь, немов людей!
37. А Ґаал далі говорив та казав: Ось народ сходить з верхів'я, а один відділ приходить із дороги Елон-Меоненіму.
38. І сказав до нього Зевул: Де тоді уста твої, що говорили: Хто Авімелех, що ми будем служити йому? А оце той народ, що ти погорджував ним. Виходь же тепер, та й воюй з ним!
39. І вийшов Ґаал перед сихемськими госп? 1. And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother's brethren, and spoke to them and to all the family of his mother's father's house, saying:
Speak loudly to all the owners of Shechem: What is better for you: is there seventy men over all of you, all of the sons of Jerubbaal, and your rule over one man? And remember that I am your bone and your body.
3. And his mother's brethren spoke of him to all the words of Shechem's lords, and their heart bowed to Abimelech, because they said, He is our brother.
4. And he gave him seventy shekels of silver from the house of Baal-berita, and Abimelech hired behind them empty and frivolous people, and they followed him.
5. And he came to his father's house to Ophrah, and slew his brethren, the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men in one stone. And Jotham the son of Jerubbaal remained, the youngest, because he hid himself.
6. And all the owners of Shechem, and all the Beth-Millo, were gathered together, and they went and set Abimelech king for Elon-Muczav, which is in Shechem.
7. And they reported this to Jotham, and he went and stood on the top of the mountain of Gerizim, and raised his voice, and called and said unto them, Hear me, O inhabitants of Shechem, and let God hear you.
8. The trees went once to anoint the king over themselves, and they said to the olives: "Reign over us!"
9. And the olive said unto them, Have I lost my iniquity, that they honor God and men, and will I go up to the trees?
10. And the trees said unto the fig-tree, Go thou, and reign over us.
11. And he said to them, "Did I lose my sweets and my good harvest, and I will go over trees over the watch?"
12. And the trees said unto the vine, Arise, and reign over us.
13. And he said to them the vine: Did I lose my juice, that I might gladly rejoice over God and men, and I will go up to the trees over the watch?
14. Then all the trees said to the thorns: "Go and reign over us!"
15. And the thorn said to the trees: If you truly anoint me to the king over you, come and take refuge in my shadow. But if not, then fire from the thorns will come out, and eat the cedars of Lebanon!
16. And now, if you have done in your innocence, what did Abimelech make king, and if you did well with Jerubbaal and his house, and if you did him for the merit of his hands,
17. For my father fought for you, and cast his life into danger, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian,
18. And you rose up to my father's house today, and slew his sons, seventy men, on one stone; and they made Abimelech king of his handmaid over the owners of Shechem, for he is your brother;
19. And if you have done with righteousness and innocence with Jerubbaal and with his house on this day, then rejoice with Abimelech, and let him rejoice in you.
20 And if not, then come forth out of Abimelech, and devour the hosts of Shechem and Beth-Millo, and fire out of the masters of Shechem and of Beth-Millo, and eat of Abimelech.
21. And Jotham fled, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there before his brother.
22. And Abimelech had possession over Israel for three years.
23. And the LORD sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the rulers of Shechem, and betrayed the officials of Shechem, Abimelech,
24. that the seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal should come in in vain, and their blood was upon Abimelech, their brother who slew them, and of the men of Shechem, which strengthened his hands to slay his brethren.
25. And the owners of Shechem set up on him the mountains on the top of the mountains, and they plundered everything that came to them on the road. And this is said to Abimelech.
26. And Gaal the son of Ebed, and his brethren, came, and they came to Shechem, and the owners of Shechem entrusted him.
27. And they went out into the field, and gathered their vine, and pressed, and made feast. And they entered into the house of their god, and they ate and drank, and curse Abimelech.
28. And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we serve him? Is not he the son of Jerubbaal, and Zebul his master? Serve the people of Hemorah, the father of Shechem, and why will we serve him?
29. And whoever would give this people into my hand, I would drive Abimelech away. And he will say to Abimelech, "Multiply your army, and go out!"
30. And Zebul the head of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, and his anger was kindled.
31. And he sent messengers to Abimelech with cunning, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed, and his brethren come to Shechem, and lo, they provoke the city against thee.
32 And now, stand at night, you and the people that are with you, and chat in the field.
33 And it shall come to pass, that, rising early in the morning, when the sun cometh down, and fall upon the city. And behold, he and the people who are with him will come to you, and you will do it to him, as he finds the right hand for you.
34. And Abimelech rose up at night, and all the people that were with him, and besought Shechem four divisions.
35 And Gaal the son of Ebed came out, and stood at the door of the city gate. And Abimelech and the people that were with him rose from ambush.
36. And Gaal saw the people, and said to Zebul, Behold, the people descend from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said to him: You see the shadow of a mountain like people.
37. And Gaal said further and said, Behold, a people cometh from the top, and one branch cometh from the way of Elon-meonim.
38 And Zebul said unto him, Where is thy mouth then, that said, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? And that
