В 2001 году Гальего решил перебраться в Испанию. Но тоска по России у него осталась, видимо, на всю жизнь. Не случайно он продолжил писать исключительно на русском языке, считая себя представителем именно русской литературы. Многие критики гадали, какую тему Гальего изберёт для своей второй книги. And I began to write these letters, realizing that I was dying. Then he showed these notes to some familiar writers, journalists, and I was told that it was impossible to write that way. If I understood correctly, Aleshkovsky, when giving his assessments, was primarily referring to Gallego’s novel “Black and White”. This thing Gallego wrote in Russian. It was first published in 2002 in the journal Foreign Literature. According to critics, the novel was very tough. And not only due to the topic. The author was able to find the right intonation. I refer here at least to the opinion of the poet Maxim Amelin. According to him, Gallego’s “language is deliberately neutral, simple words have been chosen, but there is a feeling that they have not been said by chance. They are not literary and not hackneyed, ideally correspond to the content, and this is the harsh truth of life, so the thing is comparable in force to the force, in my opinion, with Varlam Shalamov's Kolyma Tales.
